Building a School in Makueni
In the heart of Makueni County, where access to quality education was once a distant dream for many children, stands a beacon of hope and opportunity – a newly constructed school that has transformed the educational landscape of the entire community.
The journey began three years ago when our team first visited the area and witnessed children learning under trees, exposed to harsh weather conditions and without proper learning materials. The nearest proper school was over 10 kilometers away, making daily attendance nearly impossible for most children.
With the generous support of our donors and partners, we embarked on an ambitious project to build a modern school facility that would serve not just as an educational institution but as a community center for growth and development.
The construction process involved the entire community, creating jobs and a sense of ownership. Local artisans were trained and employed to make furniture, while community members contributed their labor and local materials where possible.
Today, the school boasts six spacious classrooms, a library stocked with over 2,000 books, a computer lab with 20 computers, proper sanitation facilities, and a playground. Solar panels provide reliable electricity, and a borehole ensures access to clean water for both the school and the surrounding community.
The impact has been profound. Enrollment has increased by 150%, with 200 children now receiving quality education. Teacher absenteeism has dropped to almost zero, and the first national exam results showed remarkable improvement, with several students qualifying for prestigious secondary schools.
Beyond academics, the school has become a hub for community activities, adult literacy classes, and health education programs. Parents report a renewed sense of hope and pride, knowing their children now have opportunities they never had.
This project exemplifies our foundation's approach to sustainable development – addressing immediate needs while building capacity for long-term growth and self-sufficiency. The school in Makueni stands as a testament to what can be achieved when communities and supporters come together with a shared vision for a better future.
